There are many different combat sports. Each different martial art sums up what combat sports are. Boxing is the art of defending yourself with your hands and footwork. Jiu-jitsu is the gentle art of submissions. With good coaches and a safe environment, combat sports can give people a place to burn off energy, stay focused and grow into more disciplined and stronger versions of themselves.
The common idea of combat sports for the youth would be to teach them self-defense. One misconception is that it’s dangerous for children and teenagers to compete competitively. While typically, combat sports have a bad reputation for being violent, they end up being a positive outlet such as being able to resolve and release stress at training, instead of becoming more aggressive.
Kids build confidence as they see themselves improve and they learn that hard work pays off, something that helps them way beyond the gym.

A common misconception is that in order to be in Martial Arts, you have to “compete” whether it be in tournaments or matches, but that’s not necessarily required because the lessons reside within the martial arts training.
Conflict is naturally avoided due to human nature it’s just a force of habit, putting a teenager in a sport where conflict is encouraged rather than frowned upon would help sharpen both the physical and mental elements within high stress situations.

Freshman Giselle Acosta, has been in Taekwondo for 11 years. Acosta shares her experience being involved in the sport. “It has made me very disciplined in what I do, It like keeps me in check, It’s very hard to do,” Acosta said.
“I feel really nervous, If I know they are really good, but then again I have to tell myself, I have to put myself up, so then I’ll do good,” Acosta said.
The belief that martial arts encourage irrational emotions rather than supresss them is more often wrong than right, with that being said. Parents who question if putting your child in a sport outside of school too learn some self-defense, try it out, it will onlymake them stronger in the long run.
