This year’s Homecoming theme, “A Night of Glory,” was revealed during the school’s Welcome Back Rally on Aug. 30. With it being distinctive to previous themes and that of other schools, there was a variety of reactions to the announcement.
Previously, the school’s Homecomings have been mostly based around urban environments and party culture. With themes such as, “Every Night is an Adventure,” which revolved around Las Vegas nightlife or the New York inspired “NY City Glitz: The Glam Life,” the choice of Greek mythology struck as a hard contrast, but it allows for students to plan a creative look for the event.
Since the Renaissance era, Greek mythology has been well-known for its influence in the media and art. The myths depicted in Greek mythology have become the foundation for newer artists moving forward, even in modern times for works like book series, Percy Jackson.
“Greek mythology in general, to learn about people’s different beliefs and stuff, it’s nice and it’s cool to acknowledge that everyone has their own beliefs,” said sophomore Sanaa Ingram.
Although the theme offers students a unique homecoming experience, there was some opposition to its announcement. With some of the subject matter in Greek Mythology being looked down upon, such as taboo acts and sexual violence, there was concern over whether or not it was appropriate.
“I like Greek mythology, almost everything but the incestuous parts,” said junior Leo Aguilar.
Despite this concern, the theme was officiated as it is. After discussing the theme with the core leadership classes ASB, Renaissance, and Link Crew, senior ASB president Alejandro Martinez Cavazos wanted this year’s Homecoming theme to combine the dignified status of the event with something students can adjust to their style.
“If a student was unsure about the theme, I say interpret it in whichever and however way that you want that makes you feel like your best self,” said Cavazos.
This year’s distinctive theme has already begun to pave the way for a more striking homecoming experience. Although specific planned details have yet to be announced, word from leadership members express that they will be worth the anticipation.
“Plans are super exciting, super nervous and I feel like everything is going to go out super well,” said senior ASB Commissioner of Events Sophia Garcia.
