School schedules affect the lives of students daily, whether it be AP classes, zero or seventh periods, as well as clubs and sports. This can contribute to students having to change their social and daily routines to fit around their school routine.
With all these things in a student’s school schedule, it can also impact a student’s sleep schedule. According to a research article from the National Library of Medicine, a lack of sleep in students can be associated with poor physical health and poor academic grades. These students can also have trouble paying attention in class because of this.
Another impact school schedules can make on a student’s life is extra stress about classes or the bell schedule. Freshman Ariannie Barriga is sometimes worried about being late for classes while walking through the halls.
“I kind of get a little stressed out only because I’m trying to get to class ,” Barriga said.
AP classes can also have an impact on a student’s stress level since they are college-level classes that students can take. According to a research article from New York University, academic and social challenges are common in students, and students may feel that these more advanced classes are not appropriate to their development level. They may even feel they are being asked to work too hard.
Junior Olivia Guan recommends not overestimating yourself when it comes to choosing your schedule. With a packed schedule, students won’t be able to have any time for themselves or their friends if they are too busy with school stress.

“I don’t have any social life, my entire daily life is just focused on doing academically well in school,” Guan said.
School sports and club sports may also be contributors to the stress and schedule change in a student’s life. According to another research article from the National Library of Medicine, sports alone can cause stress in a student. This can be because of self-pressure, fear of failure or parental and coach pressure. This, added to school pressure, can negatively affect a student’s daily life, such as creating burnout and anxiety.
With all these things impacting a student’s life, it is important to be able to understand where the stress may be coming from and to prioritize student health. This can include taking breaks when needed or not setting expectations too high. Even with a packed schedule, students can prioritize themselves and their friends. They can do this by implementing self-care routines and dedicating certain times to hang out with friends.
