On Saturday, Principal Charles Park was made aware of a water leak found in the computer science room, T-106. The water leak came from the room above, T-207, chemistry and AVID teacher Douglas Races’ room. The soaked panels in room T-106 collapsed, causing water damage to computers and 3-D printers.
It is speculated that on Friday, Oct. 31, multiple students left laboratory sinks running, which leaked onto the ceiling panels above the computer science room and according to Park, causing over $1000 damages which has yet to be determined what precautions will be.
“There was a lot of damage done to not only the room upstairs, but also the room downstairs and we don’t know exactly when we’ll have this completely restored and repaired,” Park said.
According to Park, within an hour of discovery, district personnel was alerted and American Technologies, Inc. (ATI) was contacted. ATI technicians installed temporary industrial-grade dehumidifiers to combat the damage and humidity.
These computers are important to the robotics team and especially at this time as they will soon begin their competitive robotics season.
In addition to the destruction, mold is a part of the cost in damages along with plumbing, computers and 3-D printers.
According to Park, the students at fault have been identified by authorities and disciplinary action is in process. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details have been released.
“Any property damage, whether intended or if you’re a bystander and you have responsibility, yes, you can be held accountable to the fullest measure,” Park said.
Douglas Race declined to be interviewed for this article.
