The dance department’s annual winter dance showcase was held last night and highlighted a variation of dance styles including hip-hop, lyrical, K-Pop, jazz and contemporary. While the dance department has two showcases every year, these showcases are a memorable experience for the members because for some, this is the last time they will dance in front of an audience.
Seniors Jaylah Trejo and Angelina May are members of the advanced dance team, Dub C, and were required to participate in the showcase to count as their final. The two dancers spent time in school and afterschool school practicing their dance routines, reviewing formations and choreographing. Trejo performed in three dances, as well as choreographing the showcase’s opening dance which was the Dub C 2024 Welcome Back Rally set.
“I’m kinda relieved this is my second to last one… while I am glad I’m also sad because it’s getting closer to graduation,” said Trejo.
May performed in five group dances and her preparation for those were stressful, but exciting. With this being May’s last winter dance showcase, she has thought about her freshman year, and realized how far she has come.
“Don’t stress out… definitely don’t choose one dance when it’s your first time performing and definitely don’t take dance for granted,” said May.
Along with the dancers who mainly contributed to the dance showcase, Dub C advisor Andrea Williams helped with the organization and ensured a good outcome of the event. Williams oversees all components of the event, including set orders, snack bar, ticket sales, and collaboration with the tech department.
“While Dub C is dancers they are also artists… that class allows them to have the freedom to express themselves however they want… If they have a song they have been listening to and they start seeing a vision in their head, the showcase is the time to express themselves,” said Williams.
Alumni and previous Dub C member Jessie Guerrero attended the dance showcase to support the program. She loved seeing all of her friends because of the family-like bond they had created. While watching, Guerrero remembered when the performers had first started and she saw the notable improvement in the dancers.
“The vibes are truly amazing, my dance family will always be my family,” said Guerrero.
The showcase concluded with an entire group dance named “Fire, Wind, and Fire Mega Mix.” All the dancers then came out by grade level to give a bow together, then the soloist gave a separate bow to the audience. The Dance department has one other dance showcase, the “End of Year showcase,” which the date is to be determined. This showcase is open to anyone on campus who is willing to audition with Williams.
