Junior James DeLuna has been a key player for the West Covina golf team for three years now. He was the only freshman to play on the varsity team and is now the golf team captain. DeLuna showed a lot of promise as a freshman; even though it was his first year ever playing golf, he proved that he could keep up with the older group he had to compete with.
“I started playing golf during my freshman year and it felt pretty good when I made varsity. It felt great and gave me a lot of motivation to be the best golf player I could be,” DeLuna said.
DeLuna has had many accomplishments and big wins in his season playing with West Covina, but the most memorable accomplishment was when they faced off against South Hills. Although he had a lot of accomplishments, it wasn’t easy to get to where he is at today.

“Right now, my biggest struggle is how I’m not shooting how I was in the first two weeks of play. I am curving to the left, but I am working hard on fixing my shot to compete at my level again,” DeLuna said.
The junior is looking to get better every time he is playing and is hoping to continue playing golf even after high school. He is looking to take golf into the college level and to be at the top of the competition.
“I continue to play golf because it’s a great sport and I want to make something out of it. I am on track to getting a scholarship and hopefully playing golf in college,” DeLuna said.
DeLuna is on track to making his name known for West Covina and is looking better every time he plays. He is looking to win a league championship and make it to CIF this year, so schools will start noticing him this year. With the way DeLuna is playing, he is really looking strong and promising for this season, so make sure to support James and the rest of the West Covina golf team.
