At the age of 6, sophomore Steven Cantero knew that he wanted to try out the sport, so he began to play football, and he grew to love it. Football has kept him busy, out of trouble, and has encouraged him to keep his grades up.
He is one of the best players on the JV team and gets playing time during kick off under the Friday night lights. But when Cantero plays on JV, he wears number 11 and plays wide receiver and safety.
Although Cantero has been playing the sport for several years, from time to time, he still gets nervous before a game.
“We did alright during pre-season, but we should have been undefeated. However league should be a good season, we have a solid team,” said Cantero.
Cantero believes that Charter Oak High School will be their toughest competitors because they’ve always had a good team.
Giving himself an evaluation as he’s been playing, Cantero has been doing well and scoring touchdowns.
His teammates have also had nothing but great things to say about him.
Junior Jamie Bermudez, who plays the same position as Cantero, said, “He contributes to this team through his hard work and effort. He’s a team leader and I love playing with him because he teaches me new things every day. When Steven gets on varsity he’s going to be a great player.”
It’s very important for the receiver and quarterback to know how to play together so they can make big plays and follow them through.
“I feel like we are usually on the same page and I know what he is trying to do. Before a play, we like to come into a stare with each other, and I know he wants the ball,” said sophomore Joseph Barcena, quarterback for the JV football team.
