You know these are desperate times when people are stealing something as precious as a student’s bike. Not only is bike theft happening all over around our campus, but it’s happening right here in our home of the Bulldogs. If you’ve ever gotten your bike stolen, then you know the lost feeling that fills your head after you notice your bike is not where you left it and it feels like the most unlucky day. For most students who ride their bike to school, it is their only transportation and it’s sad because a lot of them put so much money into their bikes and these people are taking that away from them.
It’s true that more and more people in West Covina are becoming victims and there’s no doubt the reason is for personal need to have a bike. It is not only a personal need, but there can be profit involved from a stolen bike. These criminals sell parts to other people for a good amount of money and we’re letting it happen right under our noses. So what’s going on in the bike racks? Many of my friend’s bikes have been stolen off campus but only one of my friends have gotten bike stolen on campus and the person who took it got away with it. I investigated the problem and it’s obvious that there needs to be cameras watching every corner of the bike racks.
I myself was once a victim and it’s hard to find the person who stole the bike you love and know. I believe if our security actually cared about the bikes locked up on the racks, we wouldn’t have any of these bikes missing in the first place. More importantly if we had cameras to tape any activity during and after school. Many students will be grateful because if their bikes were stolen that person who took it would be caught red handed. I think it’s terrible how we have to worry about sketchy kids taking anything they can get their little hands on.
We have to think back to the potheads in the park who are always asking students if they want to buy “their” bike that’s missing a front rim and has a half broken lock on the back rim. Let’s not put all the blame on them though, because our school has yet to do anything about the problem at our park and on our campus of stealing.
