One of our very own alumni who graduated in 2011, Temituoyo Oroye, has created a career off of skateboarding. Over the past 10 years of skateboarding, he has come to the point where he wants to learn different skills.
He sees skateboarding for more than just what it is. He is interested in a long-term career, but to him it wouldn’t matter if it came to that or not. It’s always been apart of his life, and will stick with him forever.
“I’m at a point where I want to learn how to skate everything. There are different aspects of skating, so it’d be boring to just stick to one thing,” Oroye said. “I’m not too worried about where it’ll take me, a career with skating would be cool but it’s a passion for me, it’s with me forever.”
Oroye loves the way skateboarding is so unique from everything else. He has been skating ever since he was 12, and is now currently 22. He has learned he has nothing to lose, but only things to gain if he tries to make a career out of it. He enjoys it so much because out of those long 10 years the learning has never stopped.
For him, it’s pure devotion and passion that keeps him going along with the support of family and friends. Also with the help of sponsors such as Pawnshop Skate Co. and Lakai, he’s able to make his way further and further into his skating career.
“Skateboarding, it’s an easy way to do your own thing. Kinda just be your own person, dress how you feel, being a freak,” Oroye said. “There aren’t any boundaries that come with it. No coaches giving you plays, no rule book. It means independence and freedom.”
