As graduation night approaches, many seniors are trying to raise their grades to increase their GPA in order to receive an academic stole for their overall academic GPA from freshmen to the last semester of senior year. To receive an academic stole, there is a certain GPA a student needs to get for each honor. Here are the different levels of academic honors:
(3.5-3.79) White: Cum Laude
(3.8-3.99) Silver: Magna Cum Laude
(4.0+) Gold: Summa Cum Laude
This year, cords will not be given out but actual stoles that are used at college graduations will be given. On one side of the stole, WCHS will be written and on the other side, their academic honor will be listed.
“I feel people who do community service outside and inside of school deserve it because we help our school all around and are like role models to the student body,” said senior Natalie Munguia.
Other than the academic honor stole, there will be a brand new honor called a service cord. Service cords are available for any school-based service (ASB, LINK, Renaissance, AFJROTIC), co-curricular academic programs (AVID, CSF, NHS, NEHS, NSHS, & Thespians) and athletic (Hacienda Five & League Scholar Athlete). To get a service cord, there are different requirements for each organization shown below.
For organizations and clubs who want to receive a service cord, a student will have to apply for it and meet the criteria of the cord to be given and all the requirements. To be able to graduate with an academic honor stole or service cord is a high achievement for many seniors.
“Graduating at honors is the highest achievement. We wanted it to stand out at the graduation ceremony and make a distinction between students who are honored academically and those who are involved at school,” said Counselor Kristin Kajikawa.
