Various teachers at WCHS are nominated every year for the title of Teacher of the Year. This year’s winner of the title is AP Environmental Science and AVID teacher Katarina Garcia. In addition to being a science and AVID teacher, she is also an advisor for Class of 2018, the Interact Club, Sol Dogs, and the Go Green Club. She has been teaching for four years here at WCHS.

“When I found out about winning, I was honestly very surprised. I didn’t really expect to win because there’s so many other amazing teachers, so finding out that others thought I was eligible for such a title, was an honor,” Garcia said.
Garcia first knew she wanted to teach when she was in kindergarden. “It’s pretty funny actually. I remember being a kid and always drawing myself as my own kindergarten teacher because I wanted that job so badly. It became more clear that I wanted to be a teacher when I entered high school and I’d always be thinking about what I’d do as a teacher,” Garcia said.
She goes on to say that her favorite thing about teaching is the social aspect. “I love working with people. Whether it be teachers, students, administrators, or parents, it’s still fun to talk to them and interact with them all. I love the contact teaching gives me.”
Garcia loves her job as a teacher and plans to continue: she didn’t win the title of Teacher of the Year for nothing.
