The district recently passed a master plan on March 14 to provide a performing arts center for WCHS.
While the school is excited to announce the great news that WCHS will be receiving the building, it is clear that “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and that it may take some time for these projects to be finished.
Assistant Superintendent Robert Coghlan was pleased to inform that he is very excited for the process as it will bring great success to both WCHS and Edgewood High School (EHS). A performing arts center is not all that will be provided by Measure ES and the master plan.
The Board of Education proposed many things in the master plan that each school will be receiving. WCHS will not only be receiving a performing arts center, but there were many other projects proposed in the master plan. The Board agreed on relocating the weight room in exchange for a two-story state of the art science building that will have up to 16 classrooms. There may some portable classrooms removed as they have reached the end of their lifetime. The plan of installing solar panels on campus was also proposed at the Board of Education meeting; these panels will provide energy and also shade in the quad. They finally proposed that Thyberg Field will also have new stands installed for the audience.
The plan was proposed after a meeting with the equity committee. A member on the committee, Choir Director Tyler Wigglesworth said, “It was a great feeling knowing both these schools will benefit from the proposal. It will also allow for different areas here at West Covina to be used such as the cafeteria can be used for other events and open up new opportunity for different programs besides choir and theatre.”
The master plan will definitely benefit the community greatly with WCHS having a performing arts center and EHS having a new synthetic turf field and a new similar track to WCHS. They will also be entitled to new and improved state of the art science equipment. The bigger emphasis was the agreement about a new 400 seat performance center and solar panels as well. The reconstruction of the aquatics center will be upgraded to a 50m Olympic-size pool.
The Board of Education and the equity committee have been working hard to approve of these ideas.
