In West Covina on April 10, a man walked into a Home Depot and began to saw his arms off; many shoppers were in disbelief as they watched him completely cut his arms off down to the bone using a drywall saw. An off duty paramedic was present at the time of the incident and quickly began to put together rags to make a tourniquet. This may have been the action that saved this man’s life. He was then taken to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and has been doing fine since the incident.
Home Depot should hold no responsibility for this. This was a crazy man that was set on cutting his arms one way or another if it was not at Home Depot it would have been at some other store in the area. This Home Depot did the best they could to get the paramedics to this man as fast as possible. Many people say that Home Depot needed to have more safety restrictions and that the store was unsafe at the time. This Home Depot and all Home Depots are perfectly safe; they put away all power tools so nobody can get a hold of them.
This man grabbed a handsaw not a power saw. Anybody could easily open up a box with a handsaw in it and began to saw their arms off. Why should a professional company be prepared for a person to do something like this? Not everybody is going to walk into a store and begin to do bodily harm to themselves. They have no control over what somebody’s mentality is. Maybe they have some sort of mental condition that happens to flare up at a certain time that nobody can predict or have control over. If it was a mechanical machine, there should be a worker at the store that is willing to do that certain job for them. But since it was a handsaw it is up to the person to take the time to open the box and begin to do what he or she is determined to do.
Home Depot should not feel like this was at all their fault. This could have happened to any store. This was just an unfortunate incident that happened at this particular Home Depot. Hopefully this man is doing just fine and never does anything like this again.
