After five years, Sifat Khan, math teacher and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) coordinator, is ending her journey here as a teacher and a mentor. Khan primarily accepted a new position due to her long commute to campus to West Covina.
“My commute, my drive here is quite long and that’s been affecting my health. So it all came down to my health,” Khan said.
Khan plans to teach math at Amelia Earhart Middle School in Riverside and has no plans to continue AVID. Not only is Khan leaving her math students, she will also be leaving her junior AVID class.
“West Covina will always have a special place in my heart, and on top of that, my AVID kids, I’m leaving them their senior year and I think that’s the most heartbreaking part for me,” Khan said.
Junior Joaquin Diaz, an AVID student in Khan’s class, shared his most memorable moment with Khan as during freshman year, when the AVID class went to Sky Zone and had ice cream after.
“I’m really sad that she is leaving because I wouldn’t be where I am without her support,” Diaz said.
Along with memorable moments with students, Khan holds memories with her colleagues that she built friendships with.

“Ms. Gonzalez-Boix, she is literally my partner in crime, so I think I’m leaving with an amazing group of friends that I’ve made here,” Khan said.

“I have made very close friendships with my coworkers,” Khan said. “Yes they’re my coworkers, but they’re my friends now.
