For this year’s spring play, the theater department is putting on a production of “The Amazing Lemonade Girl” starting tomorrow through Saturday in the Bulldog Cafe. Written by American actor, director and author James Devita, “The Amazing Lemonade Girl is based on the true story of Alexandra “Alex” Flynn Scott, a young girl who battled cancer and influenced a nationwide movement called Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to raise awareness about childhood cancer. The play follows Alex’s journey as she opens up a lemonade stand to raise money for cancer research.
Junior Samantha Marron, who plays the main role of Alexandra Flynn Scott, was in shock to get the lead role, as this has been her first time trying out for a play. Marron was inspired to audition by her friend senior Kimberly De Paz and believes she landed the lead role due to her strong performance during auditions and similarities to Alex’s sassy, determined, spunky, fun, and caring personality.
“No matter what, Alex gets her story out there, and that’s like me, I like to get my point of view out there. I like to say how I feel and I care about others,” Marron said.
Marron describes the initial rehearsal process as very challenging, as it was her very first time reading a script. She wanted to give up during the first rehearsal, but decided to continue because she was invested in the character. Despite the difficulties, she is adjusting and knows she can handle the role.
“I wanted to give up the first practice, but I didn’t because I know that this is something that I want to try and I want to do, so I just did it, and here I am now,” Marron said.
The experience taught Marron that although theater is challenging, she should never give up on her goals. She finds getting the lead role as the most rewarding part of the play so far. and believes she can achieve anything she sets her mind to.
“I auditioned with people who had been in theater their whole high school experience, and that was my first time, and I did it,” Marron said.
According to Marron, the play offers a life lesson about expanding one’s potential and helping others. She suggests that the play can inspire others to start new ventures, similar to Alex and her lemonade stand. The play’s message about selflessness and making a difference resonates with Marron personally.
“It teaches you that life isn’t always about yourself and that you should just expand your horizons to new things,” Marron said.
By taking on the emotionally challenging role of Alex, Marron has discovered her potential in performing arts and learned valuable life lessons about perseverance and stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
