The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), a program and club dedicated to ensuring special protection for disadvantaged children, is hosting its annual karaoke night this Friday to help young children in need and foster an everlasting fun community on campus. Each year is a different theme, previously there’s been Pokemon Go, Under the Sea, and Peanuts. This year, the theme is minions from the Despicable Me franchise with the slogan “Sing to the moon”. From singing with friends or solo, this event is here to bring smiles.
“Well, it’s been a long tradition in our school, so you will expect a lot of singing and fun moments that will happen, there will be food and great memories,” senior and president of UNICEF, Ada Huang said.
UNICEF members dedicate hours after school to produce this event along with providing food, drinks, and a fun environment. Sometimes this can lead to members feeling a bit overloaded.
“Overall, it was quite overwhelming. While we started doing karaoke night we were also doing Valentine grams. So we were mixing two events at the same time, which was really stressful… in total, it took around three months ,” Huang said.
The work it takes to create and host karaoke night is a stressful yet rewarding job as members spend around two hours each day of the week immediately after school planning, painting, creating, and setting up can become fatiguing.

“The planning process is quite stressful, we have to pick a theme and also a slogan. After, we would have to work for months to create decoration for the event but overall it’s been quite worth it in the end,” Huang said.
While the work is time-consuming, junior and secretary of UNICEF, Julie Liu, believes it is worth it knowing that profits are directed towards future events and children in need.
“All the proceeds go to the UNICEF partners like Smile Train that focuses on orthodontics care for children in need… a large majority of any money we make for any event goes to funding those programs. At the end of the day, we are a fundraising club,” Liu said.
In the Bulldog Cafe from 5:30-8:30 p.m. students will be singing their hearts out. If interested in joining, presale tickets for this event are $5 and $7 at the door. If attending is not possible, there are many different ways to help out this club.
“Join the club. Come to workshops or a meeting. A little goes a long way. Dedicate some time after school or your lunch to learn and get hours,” Liu said.
