Valentine’s Day, celebrated on Feb. 14, is about acknowledging love, which can be done in a variety of ways like going on dates, giving gifts and expressing affection more so than usual. This holiday has become a global celebration as many people take the opportunity to spend quality time with their romantic partners. This day also gives people the opportunity to appreciate family bonds and self-love. Although some people feel pressured to prioritize one group over the other, this is completely avoidable and it is possible to spread love to every loved one on this special day.
Galentine’s Day is about celebrating, for the most part, female friendships. It’s an opportunity for women to appreciate one another through a series of fun activities. It was created by a fictional character Leslie Knope in the television show Parks and Recreation according to USA Today in their article Galentine’s Day 2025: When is it? Origin meaning, what to know, and popularized in the real world through social media. Knope describes the holiday as “ladies celebrating ladies” in season two, episode 16 of the show.
Senior Kimberly De Paz celebrated Galentine’s day today with her friends by buying gifts for each other. She prefers Galentine’s day because she values celebrating friendships more than romantic relationships as she believes they are more enduring and important.
“I feel like friendships last longer, sometimes than relationships. So I feel like it’s really good to have those friendships with you, especially if you’re planning on, like, having those friends for a very long time,” said De Paz.
While romantic relationships require a deeper and stronger commitment, friendships provide support and independence. Making the effort to balance between the two ensures that neither prevents feelings of isolation or dependence on one person. Prioritizing quality time with friends while sustaining a romantic connection helps keep strong friendships and a healthy relationship.
Junior Isabella Mera is celebrating both Galentine’s and Valentine’s day this year. To celebrate Galentine’s Day, she is having a sleepover with her friends over the weekend, and for Valentine’s Day, she is celebrating with her boyfriend. Mera believes in equally celebrating both friendships and romantic relationships.
“I prioritize both my friends and relationships. It’s more just like celebrating like the love that you have for everyone,” said Mera.
Both Valentine’s and Galentine’s day are about celebrating love in its different forms. Together, they remind everyone that love comes in many forms whether it’s romantic, platonic, or to oneself. No matter which day one chooses to celebrate, Valentine’s Day offers an opportunity to appreciate the people who bring love and support into their lives.
