Cross country: Alexander Escalante
Alexander Escalante is a four year cross-country athlete and current varsity runner and team captain. Cross country is one of the only sports that has a team that trains year round, causing many to shy away. For him, cross country isn’t just a sport, it’s a test of strength, discipline and heart, and has taught him that although the sport is painful, he can work through its difficulties. “Some things I like to look back on are honestly all the races I’ve had throughout the years and how I’ve come to grow from them, learn from them. They’re really great experiences,” said Escalante.
Senior year is a sentimental time for many, especially those involved on campus such as athletes. Some four year athletes from the Class of 2025 spoke about the dedication and lessons they learned while playing for an on campus team.
Football: Isaiah Ruiz
For the past four years, Isaiah Ruiz has been a notable player on the football field. Ruiz was awarded Co-Defensive Player of the Year by the San Antonio All-League on Dec. 7, 2023, his leadership as defensive captain, and unwavering dedication to his team. Ruiz spoke about how although football made him stronger, building bonds and friendships was just as important a part to his experience as he made lifelong connections."The friends I made through sports, yeah, I think sports made us closer and it opens you up to more people," said Ruiz.
