In the ongoing coffee competition between Starbucks and Dutch Bros, both chains highlight the diverse preferences of coffee lovers as they each have their own appeal, catering to different tastes and customer experiences. The way each company differentiates itself with menu selections, customer service, and- brand philosophy is essential to consider when comparing the two.
Starbucks, the global coffee market founded in Washington, in 1971, is well known for its varied menu of drinks and pastries. The company has over 38,000 stores worldwide and strives to satisfy customers with its signature lattes, espressos, and refreshers. According to Starbucks, some of their fall featured menu items include a Chai Latte, an Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai, and a Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew.
Senior Alexis Barboza likes to occasionally get Starbucks before school. The chain has become her go-to coffee chain as she feels it is close to authentic coffee. Her favorite drink at the moment is an Iced Apple Crisp Oat Milk Shaken Espresso.
“Starbucks is actual coffee, not just straight-up sugar,” said Barboza.
Many people believe Starbucks is more adequate in fulfilling caffeine needs while Dutch Bros satisfies sweeter cravings. Starbucks also allows customers to further personalize their drinks by changing the type of milk, syrups, sweeteners, and the amount of ice making it more appealing to customers.
“Whatever you’re in the mood for, they have it,” said Barboza.
Conversely, Dutch Bros, a fast-growing coffee chain founded in Oregon, in 1992, has established an industry with its creative and flavorful drinks. With only 912 locations worldwide, the company focuses on serving high-quality, hand-crafted beverages. According to Dutch Bros, one of their most popular flavors is the Golden Eagle (half caramel and half vanilla), they also serve other beverages like iced coffee, iced chai, hot chai, and hot coffee.
In addition to their drinks, many also believe Dutch Bros’ beverage sizes are larger and more affordable than Starbucks. The price of a medium strawberry iced lemonade at Dutch Bros is $4.75. The price of a grande Strawberry Açaí Lemonade Refresher, the most similar drink to the one from Dutch Bros, is $5.75 at Starbucks. A Dutch Bros medium size is 24 fluid ounces, while a Starbucks Grande contains 16 fluid ounces.
“At Dutch Bros, you get more of the drink in your cup, while at Starbucks you get more ice in your cup. You pay for what you’re ordering, Starbucks you just pay for ice,” said senior Jaylah Trejo.
However, customers have different opinions based on menu selections, prices, and flavors. The choice between Starbucks and Dutch Bros comes down to these factors, and it can help to determine which beverage chain best fulfills someone’s personal preference.
