Project HER: workshop speaks upon boundaries

From left to right juniors America Jimenez, Lexander Piatos, Jocelyn Cook, Jayden Luna, and Daniel Lopez began filling out the boundaries worksheet that was given out. After everyone filled out their papers they were passed back to one of the speakers and were kept for a game that would be played after everyone was finished filling out their paper. “I’ve always thought that women’s rights was something that we needed to speak more about, and I was hoping to find more things out about these topics here, and I think it’s just good that a topic like boundaries is being talked about,” said Cook.

Project: HER, a new club based on women’s empowerment, held a workshop on Monday with guest speakers from the Young Women’s Christian Association. Speakers Lexi Robles, David Piller and Jennifer Baltazar spoke about topics like boundaries, consent and communication skills. One of the missions for Project: HER was to have a workshop that talked about these topics so that others can learn about it and use it to empower them. By having a guest speaker talk to the members of the club, the main goal was to teach them the importance of knowing about boundaries and consent.

Project: HER held a workshop Monday in the MPR room with guests from YWCA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for everyone. The workshop was held after school from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., tacos from El Gavilan were served while everyone took a seat with a friend and had a moment to relax and catch up with one another.

Anthony Daher shared that high school taught him how to stay positive and open-minded through difficult times. “There was a lot of negativity surrounding me, and it was definitely the people I hung out with, but just knowing that negativity could help like, push me in the right direction filled me with motivation to keep pushing, regardless of whatever happened,” said Daher. This mindset taught him to be more open with others and to stay away from negativity. For Daher his two friends, seniors Matthew Jimenez and Steven Julio also helped to shape him into who he is today. “They set a standard for me, and being alongside them for a good amount of time in my life has set a point in my life to where I have to meet and I want to meet,” said Daher.

After having her business for seven months, Duarte’s main struggle is maintaining a healthy balance between the time she spends working on her school work and her business. To ease these struggles, Duarte maintains an organized schedule by managing her time wisely. “I am really organized with making my weekly schedule to make sure I don’t forget anything,” said Duarte.
Turning passion into profit
Senior Mya Salama’s fall outfit consists of a Forever 21 tank top, a thrifted flannel and white sneakers. Salama draws inspiration from streetwear with a seasonal touch by combining baggy jeans with a brown flannel and takes a relaxed approach to putting together her outfits. Salama’s two favorite stores to shop at to achieve her easy going style are Tilly’s and PacSun. “My favorite stores I feel like Tilly’s maybe… PacSun, Tilly’s and yeah I think that's it,” said Salama.
