Insight, a student-run journalism program, provides relevant information and news regarding the school. While Insight provides coverage of campus events, school sports coverage is often left out. This became an issue for Insight until editor-in-chief Katie Castillo created an extension to the program with a new sports coverage team Dog Pound Insider.
Inspired by a class she attended at the Journalism Education Association (JEA) convention in Boston, Mass. last November, Castillo envisioned a completely new type of content than what is traditionally produced by Insight.
“I went to the convention in Boston for journalism and a school had came up with a sports team to recognize student athletes on another level. I loved that idea and decided to start my own,” said Castillo.
This was when she created a sports coverage team, consisting of Insight staff members, graphic designers and video editors. Some staff members are also student athletes and chose to join it to learn more about every sport and bring more sports coverage to the school.
“I’m involved in a lot of sports and as an athlete, I like recognition so I want other sports to get recognition also,” said Dog Pound Insider staffer Matthew Munoz.
An issue that the team faced is the reality that some sports aren’t recognized as much as others on campus. The team works to develop a short film style to their content so media can be distributed and watched quickly by the audience.
“Within this next month we’ll get it rolling even more, we’ll definitely put out more content, better content, so I feel like just little by little, we’re getting better so our videos will be better quality, more entertaining, and just fun for everybody in the school,” said sports team member Adam Otero.
The Insight Sports Team continues to improve, with Insight purchasing and using new equipment to enhance content. More media will be distributed on their Instagram page with upcoming stories and videos on the way @dogpound_insider.
