With a new school year comes new Associated Student Body (ASB) officers. While there are well known positions in the ASB office like president, vice president, and secretary, many students are unaware of how ASB manages the diverse campus clubs.
Behind every working club is Alejandro Martinez Cavazos, the Commissioner of Clubs, and Melanie Herrera and Isaac Nunez as Secretary. They ensure every club gets promoted, recognized, and stays organized.
“As commissioner of clubs I basically host all ICC meetings, and I’m the organizer of all food fairs…I make sure everything is passed and that all the paperwork is correct,” said Martinez Cavazos.
Martinez Cavazos and his board makes sure every club on campus, including new clubs, get the organization and recognition they deserve. They have done so with the creation of their new Instagram account @westcoclubs where students can find information regarding all clubs. The account includes weekly bulletins of club meetings and events like workshops or fundraisers.
Martinez Cavazos presented the idea to ASB adviser Christine Vo during the summer. He wanted more recognition for clubs overall and to provide a hub for clubs as athletics and performing arts do.
“Since with clubs there’s a lot of information going out, and usually last year it would be on the Google Classroom, but not that many check Google Classroom. So I wanted that to be basically all the information for all clubs on campus,” said Martinez Cavazos.
Not only has Martinez Cavazos brought new ideas and creativity to the position, but has taken inspiration from the past and brought back older practices to help clubs.
“I brought back club liaisons as well as the weekly Sunday posts that feature all club activities and events that are happening that week, but then mainly I’ve brought new ideas to the club accounts… the thing I’m most proud of is the club bulletin,” said Martinez Cavazos.
His board with Herrera and Nunez are his support in promoting clubs. Herrera also helps run the Instagram account and aids their commissioner in any way needed.
While Herrera and Nunez hold the same officer position, they split tasks to lighten the workload. Herrera assists her commissioner and mainly controls the promotion of clubs on campus equally.
“I assist Alejandro with anything that he needs me to do but primarily my job is to do the Westco Club post every Sunday…I support Alejandro by doing anything, tasks he needs to do such as picking and delivering for club and officer of the month, taking a little workload off,” said Herrera.
Nunez’s job is primarily organizing club paperwork, rather than publicity.
“My job entails doing CRs, which stands for club reports, and it’s basically a report about every club that had either chartered or had a fundraiser or activity,” said Nunez.
The relationship and communication between the board members ensure that no one has too much on their plate, and everyone’s ideas are heard. Nunez voiced his experience being a freshman with such a big job.
“Yes, I am a freshman. Some struggles I had was trying to balance my outside school life, my ASB life, and then sports. Trying to find the balance was hard, but I figured it out and my commissioner and other secretary I think helped me find that balance and made it easier,” said Nunez.
