The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in theaters on April 5. The movie was produced by Illumination and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

The movie follows the two plumbing brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) who get sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom. Quickly into the film the two get separated, Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom and Luigi in Bowser’s castle.

The film then follows Mario trying to save both Luigi and the Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser (Jack Black) with the help of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogan).

The movie had great animation with bright colors capturing the beauty of Mushroom Kingdom. There were many easter eggs included for Mario fans to point out, one being a Yoshi egg in the credits, leaving a cliffhanger to make fans wonder about a sequel.

The movie lacked a few characters such as Yoshi, Daisy, Bowser Jr., Koopalings, and specifically Rosalina, being that a Lumalee, Rosalina’s star, was included in the movie.

The movie has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.4/10 on IMDb. I would rate the movie a 7.5/10, having the brothers separated as they entered the pipes into the Mushroom Kingdom was too quick. The movie included elements from different Mario games such as Mario Kart with the track of Rainbow Road. As well as Super Smash Bros. mixed with the arcade game Donkey Kong in the battle between Mario and Donkey Kong.

There has yet to be an announcement for a sequel of the movie, but fans speculate it will take place in Super Mario Galaxy because of Lumalee’s appearance and mentions of other galaxies.
