Choir’s Third Annual Coffee House Concert
September 28, 2018
BY EMILY MONTANO The Choral Department held their third annual Coffee House Concert on Friday, Sep 21. Coffee House is an event where singers come perform solos, duets and acapella. Various performers were joined with guitars, and ukuleles in front of an audience of parents, students, and alumni. Coffee and pastries with costs ranging from 50 cents to $5 were sold outside. The event was held outside between the “O” buildings and the Bulldog Cafe with couches and chairs to sit on, supplied by the choral department, complete with shining lights hung up all around the area. “It was a really chill environment with all the couches set up, it made it really comfortable and relaxing” senior Nathan Hua said. Sophomore Peter Dien sang acapella for the first time as part of the acapella group wittily named “Duly Noted” singing ‘I Hope You Dance’ by Lee Ann Womack and ‘Remember Me’ from Coco. Dien described this performance as “fun because performed contemporary songs with own twist” and he found it “cool being able to cover songs that liked listening to and covering it in different ways with voices.” Senior Mason Manriquez performed his first solo in front of an audience that night singing ‘This is Gospel’ by Panic of the Disco. He was “a little nervous at first but then realized that if could do it on own, then it shouldn’t be any different in front of a lot of people.” His performance and voice was well loved by the audience. To shake up the mood in between performances, Choral Director Tyler Wigglesworth made a joke to the crowd asking, “What did the sushi say to the bee?” After a few moments of awkward silence, Wigglesworth answered “WASABI.” “I really think Coffee House is a unique experience because everyone builds each other up no matter how experienced you are, everyone gets the same applause and love” and that’s what I love about this event” senior Jake Monteilh said. |
