Back in August, G-Eazy performed at a live music venue called Blue Nile. During the performance, a singer named Halsey came on stage and kissed him. The pair actually ended up becoming a couple and decided to collab. Together they made a single called “Him & I,” which was released on December 1 with a music video.
“Him & I” is a song about their relationship. The song gives off a fiery and passionate vibe. Through this song you can sense how much love the two have for eachother.
In the beginning of the music video, there’s a quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Beautiful and the Damned which reads “They were stars on this stage. Each playing to an audience of two.” This quote helps give listeners a preview on how the song and video will feel. I immediately thought about Bonnie and Clyde, which was funny because in the first verse G-Eazy comes in and refers to themselves as a “2017 Bonnie and Clyde.” Later on I found out that the two actually called it a “Bonnie and Clyde” track, which was a pretty funny coincidence.
The song also talks about their struggle of being a couple in the public eye and everyone having opinions and judging their relationship. This can be seen in the lyrics “they don’t wanna see us make it, they just wanna divide”.
The setting for the music video is in New York City, which helps give watchers a visual of how raw and urban this song sounds. The couple is seen in places like apartments, clubs, subways, flower shops, and even pizzareas. With them in this setting it seems to normalize their relationship and show that they are real people.
The song has a great instrumental and both Halsey and G-Eazy’s voice mesh well amazingly.
“Him & I” has already hit #12 on iTunes since then and continues to do well with ratings and views.
This song is perfect for anyone who’s into “ride or die” style love songs.
