WCHS band took their talents to Walnut High School for the band music festival on March 29. The band music festival is a competition where high schools come to one place and play three songs in front of three judges and get a rating based on their performance. West Covina did phenomenal in their set, getting two superior ranks from two judges and one excellent rank from the third judge. West Covina also took part in a competition where they are shown a piece of music that they have never seen before and play it on the spot. They were given a superior rank for sight reading, adding another great performance to their long list of accomplishments.
“I think the band rose to the occasion and did an outstanding job, but we definitely could improve on our dynamics and blending our sounds together,” band instructor Steve Olivas said.
The West Covina band has worked very hard to get to where they are today. West Covina has really made a name for themselves and to other schools around the district. West Covina is getting ready to take on another festival on April 1 at Mt. Sac, so the amount of time they have used to prepare for all these competitions that they are competing at is very long.
“I believe as a band we always play with 100 percent confidence and it shows when we perform in front of the judges” senior Ariadna Nicanor said.
The band program is always an amazing sight to see and always surpass everyone’s expectations even though they are already so highly looked upon. The Walnut high school music festival was a success for West Covina, but they are looking to do even better at their next competition. Make sure to see them at their next music festival at Mt. Sac on Saturday April 1 at 10:00 A.M.
