There is a new change in Edgewood Middle School eighth grade enrollment, in which the eighth graders are now automatically registered in Edgewood High School instead of WCHS. The new change now forces students who wish to go to WCHS to fill out a pre-registration form.
The enrollment change brings about concerns for WCHS teachers, as they worry that WCHS student population will lower with more students staying at EHS. This would then lead to WCHS teachers losing their jobs, due to there being less students to fill their classes. On the other hand, many teachers will be displeased if they were to be transferred to EHS as more students started to enroll there.
There is approximately 800 students attending EHS and 2,200 attending WCHS this school year. I believe that the the numbers will not have a noticeable change, as students who wish to go to WCHS will put the effort into filling out a simple form.
The enrollment change seems unnecessary; being automatically registered will not drive more students to EHS, because students will pursue the school that fits their needs. The change is a desperate attempt by EHS to try to become a super school that rivals WCHS, yet the two campuses differ tremendously in size, academics, sports and clubs.
Many parents may get annoyed by the extra step that they must do if they want their child to attend WCHS, while others may be bothered by not being asked for their opinion on the subject. Parents who plan to send their students to WCHS, such as my own, should have been consulted about my younger brother, an EMS student, now being enrolled at EHS.
“I do not mind filling out a form to send my son to WCHS. However, I hope that their will not be any additional requirements or obstacles in the process in enrolling my son. I do not find it fair that the school did not give me, an active parent, any notification of the news and did not learn of the change until my daughter told me,” said EMS parent Patricia Mendoza.
