First lady Nancy Reagan had passed away on March 6 after living a long and fruitful 94 years. She was not only 40th president Ronald Reagan’s wife, but she was an actress, socialite, and typically fought against the use of drugs with her campaign “Just Say No”. Although she was the first lady, she still had a significant influence and job. To begin her political journey, she became the first lady for California when her husband was elected for governor in 1967. While her husband was running for president, she helped him with his campaign by only keeping the helpful people around who wouldn’t sabotage it. She also helped him get through the scandal regarding approving arm sales to Iran. Obama has been in many scandals himself, and Michelle wants no part of it.
After there was an attempt to assassinate Ronald Reagan, this had been very alarming to Nancy and it was crucial more now than ever to keep her husband safe. In addition, whenever Nancy felt that her husband made a wrong choice, she would often have to intervene and make the choices for him. Many people not only in the White House, but around the world recognized that this duo was perfect since they kept each other balanced. I don’t really see Michelle Obama helping out Barack Obama when it comes to political things.
Some people had been in favor of her campaign “Just Say No” which began during her husband’s presidency. Her goal was to get support and strengthen the international drug interdiction. Michelle Obama started a campaign where she wanted kids to be more healthy, but I don’t think it was as effective as she hoped. Later on, Nancy had tragically died from a congestive heart failure. She will be buried next to her husband at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Although it is sad she passed, some people view it as that she can finally be reunited with her husband. The Library has been opened to the public to allow them to pay their respects if they wish.
“I personally think that Nancy Reagan was the best first lady that America had. I don’t see Michelle Obama putting in as much effort as Nancy did when Reagan was president,” junior Sarai Gonzalez said.
I wasn’t born during Ronald Reagan’s presidency; however, I would’ve liked to know how it would’ve been if Ronald was president and Nancy was the first lady. I also feel like Nancy Reagan was the most influential and stood out the most amongst the other first ladies.
