With over 20 million downloads in the past five weeks after its launch, the mobile app “Draw Something” is set to be the next “Words with Friends”, but for the artistically inclined. Still, I can’t help but feel that the game is much too simple to keep anybody engaged for a long time.
The game is basically set up like Pictionary; you connect with an opponent, they pick a topic of varying difficulty to draw for you, and then you have to guess what it is. Correct responses earn you points, which you can use to purchase additional colors for use when it’s your turn to draw for your opponent. In theory the app seems entertaining, and it can be fun to draw wacky pictures for your friends, but in practice I found the game to be way too easy. The subjects that you choose are very simple, even the ones designated as being of higher difficulty. In addition, you are provided with a “letter bank” that you use to form the word that describes your opponent’s picture. Although there are decoy letters included, any person good at deciphering word scrambles could figure out the answer without having to understand the illustration.
Overall, “Draw Something” does not match the hype for me. The game is far too simple, and other than making for a good laugh here and there, it isn’t particularly entertaining.
