YG, Migos, and Future are famous rappers that many people have probably heard of, but unless you’re a student at WCHS, you probably have never heard of Prentis Busby. Busby has been known on campus as an athlete. He is a three year AVID student and has participated in both football and track and field. He has played football for three years and finished off his junior season with over 300 all-purpose yards and 60 tackles on defense. Busby recently came with his first hit single, “Lean.” He is an aspiring rapper who is coming out of the West Covina area.
Busby has always had a passion for music since a young age. He likes music because it gets him hyped and in the mood to turn up. He enjoys listening to trap, hip hop and rap music, which he tries to incorporate into his own music.
“In fifth grade, I had a talent show and I was a beatboxer. I have always loved music and that’s when I realized I wanted to one day make my own music,” Busby said.
The young artist plans to expand his music genres and plans to experiment with different styles and beats with the help of his producer, Justin Maiorca, who has allowed Busby to experiment in his studio. A few artists that has stood out to him are Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar, who have both influenced the way he writes his songs. Scott is now one of Busby’s favorite rappers.
“When I was younger, I stopped music for sports, but now I want to take a break and focus more on my music,” Busby said.
He does credit sports for much of his musical success. After practices, he would catch the bus home and this gave him the time he needed to think about his music and write his lyrics. Busby hopes to one day get signed by a record label, but his ultimate goal is to become rich and famous through his music. He knows that in order to do that, he is going to have to continue to work hard and keep on making music. He is going to continue to make music and post them on his SoundCloud.
He says the key to his music is to stay true to himself and just become more comfortable expressing how he feels. He hopes to one day become the complete rapper he aspires to be through his hard work and experience. He is trying diligently to expand his vocabulary to become a more advanced lyricist.
