WCHS has gained many additions to its Bulldog staff for this academic school year. One of the many new additions to the Bulldog community is Senior Master Sergeant Abbelyn Carrey who is the new aerospace instructor for our AFJROTC program.
Carrey grew up in San Diego accustomed to the military life because her father was in the Navy. She followed in the footsteps of her father by choosing to go in the Air Force because she really likes the whole military experience and the benefits it brings.
“It became a career rather than just a job.” said Carrey.
Carrey is equipped with experience, passion, dedication and upholds the Air Force Core values not only to herself but to her cadets as well. With 23 years of military experience, including a background in recruiting she developed a love for making an impact on students lives.
“In recruiting I was able to go out with the Flight Chief and see the different schools and students. By talking to the students I wanted to make a difference and help them by taking a role as an instructor,” said Carrey.
She then further went on to pursue those goals when she got out of recruiting.
“When I got out (of recruiting) I was offered a position at John Muir High School but when I heard there was a vacancy here I decided to transfer. My passion to teach and mentor has remained the same and I just want to touch at least one or two lives. My favorite part about teaching is the interaction with the students and being able to help guide them”
In regards to changes, she hopes to make this year better.
“I want to start off with making quality cadets and building to the program. I want us to be recognized as many of the other teams and clubs on campus are. We want to become a distinguished unit, bring honor to the Air Force. Also showcase what can be done at this school and how great the cadets are,” said Carrey
The best thing about being a Bulldog is the camaraderie, acceptance and love the school shares.
“Being in this school’s program is great, there is a huge difference. This program feels like the actual military and I love it. We hope to make changes but positive changes,” said Carrey.
