New Zealand singer/songwriter Ella Yelich-O’Conner, otherwise known as Lorde, recently released her debut album “Pure Heroine” in the US on September 30. Before the album was even released, the 16-year-old’s hit single “Royals” topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts, which made her the youngest singer to reach number one since 1987.
The ten track album starts off with “Tennis Courts,” followed by “400 Lux,” then “Royals.” These first three tracks definitely create a great start to the album, with all of their catchy lyrics and rhythmic beats. Other standout songs include “Team” and “White Teeth Teens.” “Royals” gives off a different message then what most music is about nowadays. She talks about how most of us, in reality, will never be huge stars or how they “will never be royals.” Unlike other artist who brag about their money and fame, this song shows how Lorde understands teens because she is a teen herself and has gone though similar situation. Maybe that’s why it has recently been topping all the charts. She is one of the most relatable artists out there.
All the songs in the album each have their own unique stories to tell. Each song is unique and has a different feeling to it; whether it be Lorde’s haunting tone or teenage attitude. Lorde’s captivating, distinct voice is definitely something that doesn’t blend in with the rest. Her different sound is definitely something you don’t wanna miss. All of the lyrics, beats, and vocals seem to all tie in together perfectly to create an unmistakable masterpiece, called “Pure Heroine.”
